It is also extremely important to discuss with your surgeon any concerns or worries you may have as well as discussing what recovery will entail and what possible complications may arise. It is much better to prepare for the worst and be pleasantly surprised by the best than to expect the best and be devastated by horrible complications.

History of acupuncture

History of acupuncture
Acupuncture is a
fascinating method for curing various illnesses. It may seem like
merely placing some needles at specific points on the body but
acupuncture has a fascinating history as well. The history of
acupuncture can be traced even to the Stone Age. Sharpened stones
called as Bian Shi were used for acupuncture in China as early as
during 3000BC. There are also archaeological evidences that suggest the
application of acupuncture during the Han dynasty. Korean literature
describes about traditional Korean medicine that used a system called
as chimsul. This method is important even in Japan where it is famous
as Kampo. Shen Nung, the father of Chinese medicine, is the first
person who theorized about the circulation within the human body.
These theories were made about 5000 years ago. It was these theories
that lead to the formation of acupuncture. Shen Nung proposed the idea
of Qi. Qi is an energy that flows through the human body through
certain specific channels that are called as Meridians. The theory
proposed by Chen Nung stated that if the flow of Qi to the different
parts was interrupted due to some reason, then it resulted in certain
illness. He also stated that this can be cured by regulating the flow
of qi. The history of acupuncture relates that Shen Nung observed that
to have an orderly flow of Qi, certain points in the body that the
Meridians come into contact with the skin surface should be
manipulated. Such points should be accessed through needles insertion
into the skin and this practice is called as acupuncture. However,
hundreds of contact points are present in the human body and the
needles are inserted depending on the ailment. In-depth diagnosis is
done to locate the points where Qi gets obstructed.
Initially, the treatment of acupuncture was remained unacceptable even
by the Chinese communist party. They even agreed it to be superstitious
and irrational. They also viewed it as a hindrance to the progress of
science. In 1950, Chairman Mao united western medicine with Traditional
Chinese medicine officially and this brought significance and
prominence to acupuncture treatment. The acupuncture gained importance
in the USA in early 1970s. The US president Richard Nixon visited China
and was amazed to see acupuncture being used to cure serious ailments.
This was practiced only in the Chinese communities and the person
administering the acupuncture had learnt it from their forebears. Then
onwards, acupuncture played a significant role in the medical system of
china. Although, today acupuncture is modernized, it can never lose its
identity of being related to a philosophy instituted thousands of years
ago.

Nonmedical treatment for bipolar disorder

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Nonmedical treatment for bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder is a relatively common mood disorder that is a universal phenomenon and affects all kinds of people, irrespective of the sex or race. Characteristic features of bipolar disorder include the person experiencing extreme mood changes which swing between mania and depression, polar opposites. These mood shifts are unpredictable and last for abnormally long periods of time and are in fact known to last for up to a month or more. Due to the extreme variation in moods, a person affected with bipolar disorder will often behave erratically and experience a lot of mood changes. All these affect the person’s relationships and ability to function normally. In severe cases of bipolar disorder, the person is likely to experience psychotic symptoms (hallucinations and delusions) and may also have suicidal ideations, both of which are to be taken seriously. The best way of managing bipolar disorder is through the use of medication. In fact medication has been proven extremely successful in keeping the symptoms of bipolar disorder under check, and in allowing the person to live a normal life. However along with medication, other forms of non-medical treatments for bipolar disorder are also available which may be used together with medication, or by themselves in case medication is not needed. The most common non-medical treatment for bipolar disorder includes different types of psychotherapy. These are extremely helpful in educating, supporting and guiding patients and their families about bipolar disorder and effective ways of handling it. Psychotherapy has been proven to reduce instability of mood, hospital visits as well as improve functioning. Psychotherapy is generally offered by a licensed psychologist or counsellor along with a psychiatrist. The most common non-medical treatments for bipolar disorder amongst psychotherapies include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychoeducation, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, family therapy and behaviour therapy. CBT helps people learn how to recognise and change their thought patterns in order to change their behaviours and control mood changes. Psychoeducation aims at teaching the patients about the disorder and the treatment, along with recognising symptoms so that early interventions can be sought. Psychoeducation is useful for the families too. Another useful non-medical treatment for bipolar disorder for families is Family therapy. Family therapy uses techniques designed to reduce the levels of stress in the family members which is the direct result of the bipolar disorder. The new therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy helps people develop a routine for their daily living which helps in normal functioning as well as improve interpersonal relationships. By following a set routine, the chances of a manic episode are reduced.

Vaccination schedule

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Vaccination schedule
Man has come a long way in understanding diseases and ways to prevent them. Gone are the times when the most common cause of death was illness and infection. We now know the functioning of the immune system and the value of vaccinations in aiding and developing a strong immunity against diseases. We have developed vaccinations for a huge variety of infections and everyday, more are being tested. However, developing them alone is of no value. They have to reach the larger population to be successful in controlling the spread of disease. In such situations, having a vaccination schedule for countries and people to follow is extremely helpful. A vaccination schedule is simply a series of vaccinations, dosage and timings suggested by physicians or a health regulatory body (like the CDC) to be taken over a period of time. Some vaccinations are country specific depending on the prevalence of the disease. For example, the Yellow Fever vaccination is not on the vaccination schedule in the US but is required to be taken by travellers going to countries in the African continent. Vaccination schedules also differ for different countries. Since health facilities and vaccination costs can be expensive, it is not feasible to have the same vaccination schedule for all countries. Countries like the US have a schedule that is administered over the first 5 years of a child’s life and can cost up to $700. However in developing countries, the vaccination schedule is for the first 9 months, at a cost of about $25, excluding some of the more expensive vaccinations for rare diseases. Initially in the 1950′s there were only a few vaccinations to be taken by children, for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and smallpox. In the 1980′s vaccinations were required for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, smallpox as well as polio, rubella, measles and mumps. However, since then, several more have been added to the list, including hepatitis B, pneumococcal vaccine, varicella vaccine, etc. Owing to this ever increasing list, vaccination schedules have become more complicated than before. In the US, the vaccination schedules for children are given by many agencies including the CDC. This schedule is for 0-6 years of age and recommends some of the following vaccines: Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (TDP) vaccine, Hepatitis A and B, Influenza vaccine, Measles – Mumps – Rubella (MMR), Polio, Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, Meningococcus vaccine etc. Owing to the advancements in science and the development of new vaccines, the number of shots that children have to take as part of the vaccination schedule is increasing every few years. However, scientists are working on combining more of the vaccines together to bring down the number of shots that the children have to take and yet remain protected against illness and infection.

This is a condition that has no symptoms and indicates only during the blood tests. Fortunately, hypothyroidism is diagnosed easily and the treatments are restored to normal functioning of thyroid. The treatment is effective only if the patient is free from any sort of harmful consequences thereby living a normal life. Goiter and iodine deficiency are some of the significant problems seen in less developed nations leading to mental retardation also. Hypothyroidism when left untreated becomes life threatening with severe complications and is known as Myxedema coma. The symptoms of this include fall in body temperature, decreased lung function, constipation, seizures, slow heart rate, urine retention, fluid build up and eventually coma. It is not common, but develops in patients who are left untreated and are subjected to infections, stress, and surgery or also due to severe cold. Emergency treatment is recommended. The highest risk in older patients leads to heart problems as well. Suppurative Thryoiditis is life threatening infection and is rare. This is immune to infection. It begins with upper respiratory infection and includes symptoms such as neck pain, rash and fever. Such patients experience in speaking as well as trouble in swallowing. Treatment should be immediate. Thyroid hormones affect the heart directly as well as indirectly. They are associated with the heart rate and output. The thyroid hormones keep the blood vessels smooth to allow flowing of blood smoothly. Hypothyroidism increases the cholesterol levels and also other fat molecules called lipids in association with heart disease. Thyroid condition can be treated and this reduces the blood pressure levels. Hypothyroidism reduces the heart rate and the pumping capacity increases the blood vessel walls stiffness. All these leads to increase in blood pressure and these patients are more prone to developing hypertension. Patients with chronic hypothyroidism should have regular checkup of their blood pressure, in particularly pregnant women. Hypothyroidism affects the contraction of the heart muscle and elevates the risk of heart failure. Some of the effects are depression and this is severe in hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is chronic especially in older women. Untreated hypothyroidism causes behavioral and mental impairment. The conditions with hypothyroidism worsens are headaches and it is also observed that glaucoma can be increased. Women having fewer problems experience joint stiffness.
